Well, today is the day I leave for Kenya. I have held on to the comfort & routines of life for the last few days, knowing that things will be very different in just a few hours. I have treasured up memories of the garden, sounds of the birds through our open windows, last laughter with good friends...times with Frank & Meg, calls to Kate & Chrissy... so much of the precious ordinariness of life.
And I've gone through my checklists again: passport, visa, shot records (yellow fever mandatory, typhoid suggested, everything else up-to-date... especially tetanus!), malaria pills, skirts to work in (cultural competence), rubber-bottomed shoes for the slum, a suitcase full of flip flops & books to give away, list of ...other than that, the packing has been fairly ordinary (camera, sun tan lotion)!
